Sat 21 September 2019:
Protests in Egypt tonight spread to Tora prison, according to the Egyptian Centre for Rights and Freedoms.
According to the network, prisoners knocked on doors and called for freedom from behind bars.
The prison holds many political prisoners, with Human Rights Watch describing the detainees living in dire conditions with bare cells without beds, and prisoners without soap.
Video clips on social media showed that the chants were loudly demanding the overthrow of the regime and the departure of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
In scenes reminicent of the Egyptian revolution in 2011, protesters were filmed ripping down a banner displaying the image of the Egyptian President in Mansoura, before stamping on the poster.
Mansoura, Egypt – taking down posters of Sisi. I don’t think Sisi can survive this, and I think the army establishment has already decided to sacrifice him so that it can stay in power. https://t.co/cP0UOJr5R4
