An Egyptian-Dominican archaeological mission has uncovered archaeological finds, including anchors and amphorae, that confirm the existence of an ancient submerged port linked to the Taposiris Magna temple west of Alexandria, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced on Thursday.
The results of a joint geological and archaeological survey revealed that the site once contained an internal harbor protected by coral reefs, according to a statement by the ministry.
The survey uncovered stone and metal anchors of various sizes and large numbers of amphorae dating back to the Ptolemaic period of ancient Egypt (305-30 BC). The research results also showed that the ancient shoreline was about four kilometers from today’s coast.

The work also revealed the remains of a tunnel stretching from the Taposiris Magna temple to the Mediterranean, where divers discovered additional archaeological evidence supporting the presence of ancient maritime activity.
The Taposiris Magna temple is an ancient temple complex located near Alexandria. The name means “great tomb of Osiris,” referring to the ancient Egyptian god associated with death and rebirth.
Kathleen Martinez, a Dominican archaeologist and head of the archaeological mission, described the finds as “a new chapter in the study of the history of Taposiris Magna.”
For his part, Egypt’s Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy said that “this discovery reflects the historical depth and maritime dimension of ancient Egypt, and confirms that its coasts were not only cultural centers but also strategic hubs for trade and cultural exchange with the ancient world.”
The minister affirmed the ministry’s continued support for such research projects, which “shed light on Egypt’s submerged treasures,” he added.
