Sun 11 August 2024:
India is anxiously awaiting the release of 69 of its nationals who were recruited to fight in Ukraine as part of the Russian army, the country’s foreign minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, informed Parliament on Friday.
Jaishankar revealed that out of the 91 Indian nationals initially recruited, eight have tragically lost their lives. “Fourteen of them have been discharged or in some manner have come back with our assistance. And there are 69 Indian citizens who are awaiting release from the Russian army,” he added, highlighting the efforts to repatriate those still in Russia.

During his address, Jaishankar also mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had discussed the situation with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to Moscow last month, signaling India’s diplomatic efforts to secure the release of its citizens.
In a related development, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the premier agency for investigation and prosecution, arrested four individuals in May on charges of trafficking Indian nationals into combat roles within the Russian armed forces. This underscores the broader issue of human trafficking that India is actively addressing.
Meanwhile, India’s economic ties with Russia remain strong, with a significant increase in the country’s imports of Russian crude oil in recent months. These ties reflect the complex relationship between the two nations amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
