In case you missed it News Desk World

Mon 30 September 2024:

The world is undergoing a profound demographic shift, with the number of people aged 65 and older projected to outnumber the youth by 2030. According to recent United Nations forecasts, the elderly will soon double the population of children under five. This global aging trend presents new challenges and opportunities for societies worldwide.

A Dramatic Rise in the Elderly Population
By 2050, the elderly population is expected to more than double, reaching 1.6 billion, and will account for over 16% of the world’s population. In contrast, in 1950, seniors represented just one in 20 people globally. This ratio changed to one in 10 by 2021, and by mid-century, one in six people on Earth will be over 65.

Asia and Europe Lead the Way in Aging
Asia and Europe, home to most of the world’s oldest populations, are at the forefront of this trend. Japan, with 30% of its population over 65, leads globally, followed by Italy at 23%. Hong Kong and South Korea are expected to surpass Japan, with predictions that up to 40% of their populations will be seniors in the near future. Southern Europe, including countries like Greece, Italy, and Spain, is already recognized as the world’s oldest region.

Aging Accelerates in Developing Countries
The aging population isn’t confined to developed nations. Developing countries are experiencing rapid demographic shifts, with their elderly populations growing faster than expected. By 2050, most of the world’s seniors will live in these regions. However, while developed countries have long implemented systems to address the needs of the aging, many developing nations lack the infrastructure to support this surge, prompting urgent calls for action.

Urgent Need for Stronger Policies and Support
As the global population ages, the demand for healthcare and social services for seniors, particularly those with conditions like dementia, has skyrocketed. The United Nations is urging nations to review and strengthen care and support systems to ensure dignified aging for all. Marking the 34th observance of the “International Day of Older Persons,” the 2024 theme focuses on “Dignified Aging” and highlights the importance of respecting the rights, dignity, and needs of the elderly worldwide. The message is clear: societies must adapt to accommodate this growing demographic shift.
