Sun 31 October 2021:
According to the French presidency, European Union officials will meet with African leaders to discuss how to help Africa’s poorest countries recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the sidelines of the G-20 conference, French President Emmanuel Macron will host an informal meeting at France’s embassy in Rome later on Saturday.
On Friday, Macron told reporters that he expected the G-20 to approve an additional $100 billion in aid to Africa’s economies.
The funds would come from the re-allocation to African countries of some special drawing rights, a foreign exchange mechanism offered by the International Monetary Fund to assist finance imports and originally intended for advanced economies.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Charles Michel, as well as African Union President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, will attend the summit.
The Elysee announced that the heads of state of South Africa and Senegal, Cyril Ramaphosa and Macky Sall, will participate by videoconference.
