Sun 04 September 2022:
During a visit to Doha this week, European Council President Charles Michel will discuss Europe’s energy issue with major gas producer Qatar, a Qatari government official said on Sunday.
On Tuesday, Michel is scheduled to travel to Qatar, as stated in his schedule.
Since Moscow ordered soldiers into Ukraine in late February, European countries have been looking for alternatives to Russia’s main source of gas because as Russian flows decreased, Europe’s power costs increased.
State-owned QatarEnergy, one of the world’s top natural gas exporters, has been negotiating with several European buyers for months, but no new deals have been announced.
“Charles Michel will meet several high-level officials to discuss and review regional and international issues including the Russia-Ukraine crisis, energy crisis, in addition to a number of other issues like Afghanistan, Iran, and Palestine-Israel,” the Qatari official told Reuters.
As Russia declared plans to keep its main gas pipeline to Europe closed, European authorities, who are already struggling to control skyrocketing gas prices, are now concerned about winter gas shortages. Usually, 40% of the natural gas used in Europe comes from Russia.
In addition, Qatar is looking for new clients for a significant increase in gas production that will boost exports by almost 63% and is set to come online in early 2027.
