The Claim

In a video, Mahsa Amini and her brother are seen burning the Quran.

Emerging story

Following Mahsa Amini’s death, social media users and websites began sharing a video purporting to show Mahsa Amini and her brother burning the Quran.

Independent Press Analysis

Independent Press investigated the viral claim and discovered it to be misleading.

The video circulating is not related to Mahsa Amini.

The Video Does Not Feature Mahsa Aminia and Her Brother

After a reverse image search, Independent Press discovered the video is outdated and does not show Mahsa Aminia and her brother burning the Quran.

On June 19, 2019, the video was uploaded to YouTube by the channel known as Sara Salamt.

Reza Khaksar and Somayye Salamat are seen in the video setting fire to a copy of the Quran as part of a dare challenge.

The video caption reads, “Reza Khaksar and Somayye Salamat’s challenge of burning the Quran.”

Angry demonstrations have spread to over 80 cities nationwide since the 13 September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, after she was arrested for “unsuitable attire” by the morality police, who enforce the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code.

Amini, who was from the north-western Kurdish city of Saqez, died in hospital after falling into a coma, sparking the first big show of dissent on Iran’s streets, since authorities crushed protests against a rise in gasoline prices in 2019.

“We will fight, we will die, we will take Iran back,” chanted protesters in Tehran’s Ekbatan neighbourhood, a video posted on Twitter showed.

A video from the south-eastern port city of Chabahar showed riot police firing tear gas to disperse protesters who chanted “Death to (Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei”.
