Tue 07 September 2021:
The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that fake social media profiles suspected of being tied to the Chinese government were used in an attempt to attract Asian-Americans to attend political protests, citing cyber intelligence researchers at Mandiant and Google.
Thousands of bogus profiles were utilized across social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter to encourage Asian-Americans to participate in protests against racial injustice, according to a study released on Wednesday.
According to the experts, the phony accounts network appears to have been largely unsuccessful in their attempts.
The network, however, mimics suspected Russian attempts to foment unrest during the 2016 US election using bogus social media bots, according to the experts.
While the Mandiant and Google researchers did not openly blame the Chinese government, they did say that the work is very probably government-sponsored and aligns with China’s strategic aims.
The network was also accused of spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 virus, which originated in the United States, as well as positive portrayals of China’s attempts to combat the pandemic.
