The FBI has announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those suspected of deliberately starting two deadly wildfires in New Mexico last week. The federal agency is investigating the causes of the South Fork Fire and Salt Fire, which ignited on June 17 and have caused significant damage.
New Mexico State Police confirmed two fire-related deaths in Ruidoso on June 19. The fires have scorched over 24,000 acres.
New Mexico has endured a tough week with wildfires, a dust storm, and severe flooding. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham described it as a “hell of a week” on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
Extreme Heat and Severe Weather Plague the US
Over the weekend, extreme heat affected about 95 million people in the US, with temperatures 5-15°F above normal. The mid-Atlantic experienced near-record temperatures, the Southwest faced triple-digit heat, and the Northeast saw high temperatures with brief rain and thunderstorms.
Severe weather, including rain, wind, hail, and flooding, was forecasted for parts of the Midwest starting late Monday. Unprecedented flooding in Iowa damaged nearly 2,000 properties, leading to evacuations and disaster declarations.
Tornado hits Wisconsin
On Saturday night, a significant tornado was observed moving through southeast Wisconsin, causing extensive damage and power outages in its path in Janesville and Argyle, according to local media reports.
A tornado touched down on the south side of the city, resulting in significant damage to dwellings, businesses, and infrastructure, Fox News quoted local authorities as saying.
