Mon 23 January 2023:
The Berlin International Film Festival will host the global premiere of Sean Penn’s documentary “Superpower,” which was filmed in Ukraine and features President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to festival officials on Monday.
“More than a documentary, ‘Superpower’ is the chronicle of a film project that reality forced to change into something less controllable but more meaningful,” a festival statement said.
The Oscar-winning US actor and director was in the Ukrainian capital in February 2022, as Russia launched its full-scale attack, and then made return visits.
“Our country is grateful to him for such bravery and honesty,” Ukraine’s Office of the President wrote on Facebook last year.
The Berlinale, which runs February 16-26, is one of the world’s leading film festivals alongside Cannes and Venice.
The competition for the Golden Bear, the top honor given for the finest film, will include 18 films in this edition.
The documentary by Penn will air as part of the Special Gala series but will not compete for any prizes.
Penn is anticipated in Berlin for the festival, according to Mariette Rissenbeek, executive director of the Berlinale. She added that they are also discussing whether Zelensky can speak during the festival.
The festival jury will be chaired by Hollywood actress Kristen Stewart, and director Steven Spielberg will be awarded an Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime accomplishment.
