FIRE RAGES AT OIL DEPOT IN RUSSIA’S ROSTOV AFTER UKRAINE DRONE ATTACK

News Desk World

Wed 28 August 2024:

A Ukrainian drone strike has ignited an oil depot in Russia’s Rostov region, according to local authorities. The attack, which occurred overnight, was confirmed by regional Governor Vasily Golubev, who reported that firefighters were working to extinguish the blaze in the Kamensky district. No casualties have been reported.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated that air defense units successfully destroyed four drones over the region, though it did not initially mention the oil depot fire. The Baza Telegram channel, closely linked to Russian security services, reported that three tanks were burning at the depot after two drones struck the area.

Ukraine Targets Russian Energy Infrastructure in Retaliation

This attack is the latest in a series of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil and gas facilities, seen as retaliation for Russian assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. A significant fire has been burning at another oil storage facility in Proletarsk, Rostov, since August 18, following a previous Ukrainian drone attack. Earlier in the month, another fuel storage depot in the Kamensky district was also hit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commended his forces for targeting Russian oil facilities, suggesting these attacks contribute to bringing a “just end” to the conflict.

Russia Defuses Unexploded Munitions Near Kursk Nuclear Plant

In a separate incident, Russia’s National Guard reported defusing unexploded U.S.-supplied munitions fired by Ukraine near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited the site, with Chief Rafael Grossi warning of the plant’s vulnerability due to its lack of a protective dome.

Russia has called for the IAEA to adopt a more “objective and clearer” stance on nuclear safety amid rising tensions. The agency’s visit to the Kursk plant, which lacks protection against missile, drone, and artillery attacks, has raised concerns about the potential for a serious nuclear accident.
