Sat 19 February 2022:
For the first time since Algeria’s 1962 independence from France, women wearing the hijab, or headscarf, have been allowed to present news on state-run television.
After veiled anchorwoman Najwa Djedi presented a show on a public television news channel earlier this week, the unofficial ban was lifted.

On television, there are no laws prohibiting women from wearing the veil. Some have speculated that the lack of hijab-wearing women on television is due to personal decisions made by senior executives.
Nasira Mazhoud, like several other female presenters, was suspended from her anchorwoman role in 2012 after she began wearing the hijab.
The Quran channel was the only state television channel that allowed female broadcasters to wear the hijab.
Algeria’s Muslim population accounts for nearly all of the country’s population.
