Wed 03 November 2021:
Clement Beaune, the French Secretary of State for European Affairs, indicated on Wednesday that the European Commission (EC) and the United Kingdom will begin full-scale negotiations on fishing permits this week.
On Tuesday, Beaune requested David Frost, the UK’s main Brexit negotiator, to meet with him in Paris on November 4 to discuss the alleged anti-French bias in the granting of fishing permits in British seas. Frost accepted the invitation, and the two will meet on Thursday before meeting with the European Commission on Friday, according to French cabinet spokesman Gabriel Attal.
“New talks with European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic on Brexit and fishing licenses. Unity, solidarity and firmness in protecting our agreements, our interests and our fishermen.
The dialogue between the EU and the UK is intensifying this week,” Beaune wrote on Twitter.
The British Ministry of the Environment reported in late September that 1,700 EU vessels had received fishing licenses in British waters, with 117 of those granted to EU vessels for fishing in a zone of 6-12 nautical miles. After considering 47 applications, the ministry gave only 12 licenses to French fisherman.
France has accused the United Kingdom of failing to comply with the conditions of the Brexit agreement on fishing permits, and has threatened to implement sanctions beginning November 2. Paris, on the other hand, has chosen to postpone the sanctions until the London talks are completed.
