FORMER ALGERIAN PRESIDENT, BOUTEFLIKA, DIES AT 84

Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the ex-president of Algeria, passed away at the age of 84.The announcement was made by the country’s presidency, which gave no further details, Anadolu Agency reported.

Having come to power in 1999 following the civil war, Bouteflika ruled the country despite suffering from paralysis in 2015 amid his deteriorating health.

With the Algerian army announcing support to protests and as they continued growing, Bouteflika was forced to resign in April 2019.

Bouteflika’s birthplace remains unknown for certain, as his official biography did not name any location. According to historians, however, Bouteflika was born in Oujda, Morocco, in 1937 to a modest family.

Even his exact role in Algeria’s war of independence from France is not known for certain, although Bouteflika reportedly joined the National Liberation Army, the military branch of the National Liberation Front (FLN), in 1956, at the age of 19.
