Sun 03 November 2024:

At least 735 homeless people died in France in 2023, the organization Collectif Les Morts de la Rue (CMDR) announced in a report Wednesday, according to French media outlets.

The number rises to 826 when including those who did not die homeless but were homeless in the past, the report said.

CMDR lamented the “sad record” and recalled that 624 people died homeless in 2022 and 719 in 2021.

The average age of death for the homeless was 48.8, compared to 50 in 2019, according to CMDR figures.

Death in the streets affects mostly men (88%), but the rate for women increased in a year, the report added.

The organization warned that the actual number of deaths of homeless people could be six times higher and criticized society and the authorities for their indifference.

Homelessness is a persistent issue across European countries, affecting people from various backgrounds due to factors like economic hardship, housing shortages, and social exclusion. In countries such as the UK, Germany, and France, high living costs and housing prices make affordable housing challenging, especially in urban areas where rent is high.

Even in wealthier nations like Sweden and Norway, there are significant numbers of homeless individuals, including refugees and migrants who struggle with integration.

Many homeless individuals face unemployment or work in low-wage jobs that don’t cover their basic living needs. Vulnerable groups, such as single parents, youth, and people with mental health issues, are particularly affected, as they often have limited access to services that could help them find stable housing.

European governments have made efforts to address homelessness through policies like “Housing First,” which focuses on providing stable housing as a foundation before addressing other needs. Additionally, NGOs and community organizations play a crucial role in offering shelters, food, and medical assistance.

Yet, homelessness continues to rise in many countries, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic and recent economic pressures, suggesting a need for further investment in affordable housing and comprehensive social support systems.
