FRENCH PENSIONER ON TRIAL FOR DRUGGING WIFE AND FACILITATING RAPES BY DOZENS OF STRANGERS

A retired French man went on trial in Avignon on Monday, accused of a shocking crime that has horrified the nation—drugging his wife and allowing dozens of strangers to rape her over the course of a decade. The 71-year-old former EDF employee is alleged to have recruited the men online, with 50 of them now standing trial alongside him.

Police have documented 92 rapes committed by 72 men, of whom 51 have been identified. The men, aged between 26 and 74, are accused of assaulting the 72-year-old woman while she was heavily sedated and unaware of the attacks. The case has drawn widespread attention, with the victim’s lawyers revealing that she only discovered the abuse in 2020.

Victim Seeks Public Trial to Raise Awareness and Prevent Future Crimes

Presiding judge Roger Arata granted the woman’s request for a public trial, as she wished to bring attention to the horrific events to prevent similar crimes in the future. One of her lawyers, Stephane Babonneau, stated that she wanted to ensure “complete publicity until the end” of the trial. Despite the public nature of the proceedings, her legal team acknowledged that the trial would be an agonizing experience for her, as she would be forced to confront the rapes she endured over 10 years.

The investigation into the defendant, Dominique P., began in September 2020 when he was caught secretly filming under the skirts of women in a shopping center. This incident led to the discovery of the years-long abuse he orchestrated against his wife, a revelation that has left the country in shock.
