Tue 21 January 2025:

Geologists have discovered a large “rare” earth deposit in China’s southwestern Yunnan province, with potential resources of 1.15 million tons, the state-run Xinhua News reported on Saturday.

According to the China Geological Survey (CGS), critical rare earth elements such as praseodymium, neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium exceed 470,000 tons in this newly discovered deposit.

It is a super-large ion-adsorption type of rare earth deposit, containing key metals for the development of high-tech industries, and is of great significance to consolidate China’s rare earth resource advantages and improve the rare earth industrial chain, said the CGS, an institute under the Natural Resources Ministry.

It marked another significant breakthrough in China since the first such discovery in east China’s Jiangxi Province in 1969.

China’s southwestern Yunnan province has discovered a massive deposit of rare earth elements (REEs), critical for advanced technologies like electronics, renewable energy, and military equipment. Rare earths include 17 elements such as neodymium and dysprosium, essential for making magnets used in wind turbines, electric vehicles, and smartphones.

Yunnan’s deposit is notable for its size and high-quality ore, bolstering China’s dominance as the world’s largest supplier of rare earths, accounting for over 60% of global production. This discovery could further enhance China’s strategic control over these resources, crucial for global supply chains.

However, mining rare earths comes with environmental concerns, as the extraction process generates toxic waste. Balancing resource development with sustainability is key. For China, this deposit reinforces its position in global tech manufacturing and could influence geopolitical dynamics as countries race to secure access to these essential materials.
