Thu 14 November 2024:

A team of physicists from the University of Münster has created the world’s smallest QR code, earning them a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The QR code measures 5.38 square micrometres, which, according to the university, is approximately 20 times smaller than the previous world record held by a research group from Singapore and about seven times smaller than a human red blood cell.

The QR code cannot be seen with the naked eye, but a university spokesman said it can be magnified multiple times on a computer screen using a microscope.

The code, which links to the university’s quantum physics website, was recognized as a record by Guinness World Records following independent measurements by a technology company. The university wants to use this record to promote the study of physics.

History of the QR Code:

The QR (Quick Response) code was invented in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave, a subsidiary of Toyota, to improve the efficiency of tracking parts in automotive manufacturing.

Traditional barcodes could only store limited information, so Denso Wave developed the two-dimensional QR code that could store a larger amount of data, including alphanumeric characters, at a faster scanning rate.

Originally designed for industrial use, QR codes gained popularity due to their versatility, as they can store URLs, contact information, and other data easily accessed by mobile devices. By the 2010s, the QR code saw widespread adoption in advertising, retail, and logistics, helped by the rise of smartphones equipped with cameras capable of scanning QR codes.

Its usage skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic as it enabled contactless interaction for menus, payments, and information-sharing, making it a staple of digital engagement today.
