Sat 13 July 2024:
Public support for Germany’s governing coalition continues to wane as Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s alliance struggles to secure a majority, according to a ZDF poll released on Friday. If a general election were held next Sunday, Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) would garner just 14% of the vote, with the Greens at 13% and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) at 4%, below the 5% threshold needed to enter the Bundestag.

The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) lead with 32%, while the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) stands at 17%. This comes after a crisis within the coalition was narrowly averted, with Scholz reaching a preliminary agreement on the 2025 draft budget following 23 meetings totaling 80 hours with Finance Minister Christian Lindner and Economics Minister Robert Habeck. “Everything is great,” Scholz remarked post-negotiations.
Despite this agreement, only 7% of Germans believe cooperation within the coalition will improve, with 79% expecting no change, according to the ZDF poll of over 1,300 voters. This follows significant losses for the coalition in the 2024 European elections, where the SPD received its worst-ever result in a national election at 13.9%, and the Greens fell to 11.9%, down from their 20.5% record in the 2019 EU elections.
