Wed 22 September 2021:
Germans who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19 will no longer be compensated for lost wages if they are forced to quarantine starting in November, according to Health Minister Jens Spahn.
Workers who were quarantined for at least five days after having contact with an infected individual or returning from a “high risk” location abroad were being paid by the government.
However, as of November 1, Spahn announced after a meeting with the health ministers of Germany’s 16 states, the policy will be phased out as part of the government’s latest attempt to urge more Germans to get the vaccine.
Getting vaccinated remained a “personal decision”, Spahn said, but that decision would now “also come with the responsibility to bear the financial consequences”.
“Some people will say this means pressure for the unvaccinated. I think we have to look at it the other way around — it is also a question of fairness,” he said.
Those who have been vaccinated are no longer required to quarantine in Germany.
With the vaccine drive losing momentum, talk has turned to possible restrictions for the unvaccinated, however mandatory vaccination for some segments of the population has been ruled out thus far.
Many German states have passed laws allowing restaurants and other leisure facilities to limit admission to persons who have been vaccinated or have just recovered from the sickness.
