South Africa – Amid recent foodborne illness outbreaks across South Africa, parents and guardians are urged to take extra precautions to protect their children’s health.

These outbreaks have resulted in the tragic loss of young lives and numerous hospitalisations in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, impacting families and communities profoundly.

“These incidents are not only a public health challenge but also a tragedy for the affected families and communities,” stated the Government, expressing heartfelt condolences to all who have lost loved ones.

In response, the Government has launched a comprehensive investigation, mobilising multiple agencies across all provinces, including the National Consumer Commission, SAPS, the Department of Agriculture, and local municipalities, to address this urgent crisis. While officials rigorously monitor the situation, they emphasise the critical role of parental vigilance at home.

“Government urges parents and guardians to be vigilant about the well-being of their children and to closely monitor what they consume, particularly items purchased outside school premises.”

Parents are advised to be cautious about the foods their children eat, particularly from street vendors near schools. Checking for freshness, ensuring proper food preparation, and avoiding items from unhygienic sources are essential steps to reduce contamination risks.

“Communities are encouraged to take proactive measures to educate children about food safety and empower them to make informed choices.”

“Members of the public are encouraged to practise basic food safety measures, such as washing their hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling or consuming food.”

“Vendors, food producers, and consumers are urged to adhere to strict hygiene practices, including proper food storage, thorough cooking, and maintaining clean preparation areas.”

Additionally, families are reminded to use only approved pesticides for home pest control. Only legal and safe pest control products should be used, as restrictions on dangerous chemicals like aldicarb and Terbufos are in place.

“Members of the public are reminded that only approved pesticides may be used in the control of cockroach or rat infestations, and the use of unregistered pesticides is strictly prohibited.”

“The law prohibits anyone to be in possession of banned pesticides, such as aldicarb (carbamate), and Terbufos (organophosphates). Government has imposed restrictions on access and use of Terbufos except by registered professional trained applicators.”

The Government calls on communities to stay informed and cooperate with health officials, reporting any violations of food safety regulations. By working together and staying alert, South Africans can protect their children’s well-being and contribute to a safer, healthier environment for everyone.

“The public is reminded to refrain from taking matters into their own hands and instead work through proper channels to ensure community safety.”
