Sun 24 July 2022:

The Philippine police reported that a shooting incident occurred Sunday afternoon on a university campus in Metro Manila, leaving three people dead and two others injured. The gunman who was apprehended admitted to killing someone specifically.

The shooting occurred at the Ateneo de Manila University gate in Quezon City at 14:55 local time, according to the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), just before the law school’s graduation ceremony.

According to media reports, the former Lamitan mayor Rose Furigay, her bodyguard, and a school security guard who tried to stop the shooting were among the dead. The mayor’s daughter, who was supposed to graduate, was among the injured.

Chao Tiao Yumol, a 38-year-old doctor from the island province of Basilan in the southern Philippines, was the shooter, according to police.

According to the police, the gunman changed his clothes after the shooting and seized a car in an attempt to escape, but was caught by the police. The police presented the suspect to the media three hours after the shooting.

Yumol admitted to the killing, claiming he shot Furigay for her “involvement in illegal drugs” in the province.

The shooting incident forced the school authorities to cancel the graduation rite and put the campus “on lockdown.”

Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos said he was “shocked” over the incident and ordered law enforcement agencies “to thoroughly and swiftly investigate these killings and bring all involved to justice.”

Alexander Gesmundo, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was scheduled to attend the Sunday afternoon law school graduation ceremony. Gesmundo was “in transit when the shooting happened and was advised to turn back,” according to Supreme Court spokesman Brian Hosaka.

The shooting took place as a gun ban was being enforced by the authorities ahead of President Marcos’ first State of the Nation address on Monday. Over 20,000 police officers and soldiers have been deployed in the area as part of a police order to increase security at the House of Representatives complex, which is a few kilometers from the campus and located in Quezon City.
