Tue 01 February 2022:
Health care workers who do not get fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by March 31 will be sacked from Greece’s National Health System, according to the country’s health minister (ESY).
Speaking on Skai TV, Thanos Plevris also clarified that by that date, there will be an overall measure on whether there must be obligatory vaccination for health care staff every year after the pandemic.
Plevris further stated that, starting of February 7, Greece will require a booster dose in order to be declared completely vaccinated.
Health-care workers have demonstrated against obligatory vaccination in Athens, and nurses and doctors were given a three-month ultimatum to change their minds in December.
Plevris explained that the relaxation of measures, which took effect on Monday, was agreed after a group of experts made suggestions, and that daily numbers had been dropping.
Music will resume at dining and entertainment locations on Monday, and they will be open for longer hours. Customers must, however, remain sitting rather than standing.
Last month authorities announced that older people in Greece that are not vaccinated face monthly fines.
Those over the age of 60 and without the jab will have to pay a €50 penalty in January, rising to €100 in February.
Greece has the seventh oldest population in the world, as measured by share of residents aged 65 and over, according to the US-based Population Reference Bureau.
The number of new coronavirus infections in Greece has decreased in recent days, with 11,124 new cases and 97 deaths reported on Sunday.
According to statistics, the overall number of infections in the country has reached 1,920,992 and the death toll has reached 23,372.
