Sun 26 May 2024:

A fire at a children’s hospital in New Delhi has resulted in the deaths of at least seven infants, according to a fire service official. Twelve newborns were rescued from the hospital and transferred to another facility, but five succumbed to smoke inhalation, reported fire officer Atul Garg on Sunday. Five others survived and are receiving treatment for smoke inhalation.

The fire erupted late Saturday night at the Baby Care Hospital in New Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area. Television footage showed firefighters working to extinguish the blaze on the hospital’s first floor. Fire officer Suresh Kumar said the fire was put out in about an hour, and the cause is under investigation.

The hospital owner has fled, and police are pursuing legal action against the individual, who remains unidentified. The Press Trust of India news agency cited Garg, noting that 14 fire trucks were deployed to control the fire, which spread quickly due to an oxygen cylinder explosion.

“All the 12 newborn babies were rescued from the hospital with the help of other people,” said police officer Surendra Choudhary in a statement, adding that when they reached the hospital, several of the infants were dead.

The deceased infants’ bodies have been moved to New Delhi’s GTB Hospital for postmortem examinations, as reported by The Indian Express. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal described the incident as “heartbreaking.”

“We all stand with those who lost their innocent children in this accident,” he said on X. “The causes of the incident are being investigated, and whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared.”

This tragedy occurred just hours after a significant fire at a crowded amusement park in Rajkot, Gujarat, killed more than two dozen people, including at least nine children. Two people have been arrested in connection with that fire, according to local media.

Fires are frequent in India due to widespread violations of building laws and safety codes.
