Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ SA lets 153 Palestinians disembark following 12-hour plane ordeal: “Given that Palestinians are eligible for 90-day visa-exempt travel to South Africa, they have been processed as per normal and will be required to adhere to all conditions of entry,” South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) said in a statement late on Thursday.

◼️ Secret electricity price hikes in SA: Afriforum, an advocacy group for South Africa’s Afrikaner population, took Nersa to court because over a number of years, the regulator had recommended high price hikes without justifying this publicly.
For Nersa, the judgment means that it can no longer ignore rules that say it must consult the public. It will also need to do this in future according to a strict, court-ordered timetable.

◼️ Another major world leader snubs South Africa: China’s President Xi Jinping will not attend the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg next week. Instead, Premier Li Qiang will represent Beijing at the meeting. Xi’s absence places him among a small but growing group of leaders who are also skipping the summit.

◼️ Will SA finally get Starlink? The BEE regulations prevent companies, even large international firms that typically do not sell shares to local partners, from qualifying for individual licences under the Electronic Communications Act, even if they can contribute to South Africa’s transformation goals through means other than traditional ownership.
