◼️ Ramaphosa will not hand over to a Chargé d’ Affaires: President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says on X that Ramaphosa will not hand over the G20 Summit to a chargé d’ affaires after the US reiterated that it would not attend the Summit in Johannesburg.

◼️ GBVF officially classified a national disaster in SA: The announcement was made on the same day that thousands of women staged a nationwide shutdown demanding urgent action. The move also comes a day after President Cyril Ramaphosa declared GBVF a national crisis. In this case, the classification strengthens existing systems rather than creating new emergency structures.

◼️ Keir Starmer announces major UK investment push in SA: Starmer will further announce a new agreement with Crossrail International to provide British technical expertise for South Africa’s rail reform, opening the way for private investment and new infrastructure development. With annual trade between the two countries already exceeding R250 billion, the UK and South Africa have also finalised a new Authorised Economic Operator Mutual Recognition Arrangement.

◼️ National shutdown hitting SA today: While peaceful and planned protest action has been given the all-clear, the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has made it clear that the areas surrounding the G20 summit will be on lockdown. The structure said it will enforce a ‘hard lockdown’ around the FNB Stadium and Nasrec Expo Centre, where the summit will be taking place.

◼️ Information Regulator sends warning to spammers in SA: On 17 April 2025, the amended POPIA Regulations came into effect, which the Information Regulator explained placed stricter measures on responsible parties to comply with the provisions of POPIA. In addition to enhancing the right to privacy for data subjects, the amendment imposed stricter rules on direct marketing practices, particularly in relation to the processing of personal information.
