Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ US ambassador-designate aims to take SA to task: “When people and businesses in South Africa believe their private property risk rights are at risk, when many South Africans feel unsafe in their homes, when rampant corruption and unfair business practices hold back the South African economy, and when South African politicians greet as friends those who seek to destabilize the world’s peace and security, then common ground between our two countries feels harder to find,” Bozell III said.

◼️ SAMNET raises alarm over Israeli citizens entering SA: “Having witnessed myself a flight between Johannesburg and Ethiopia and the number of Israelis coming via Tel Aviv to Addis Ababa and then to South Africa… and reports that thousands of Israelis, since the Gaza genocide, have been leaving Israel to other parts of the world, but South Africa in particular.” In a letter to Minister Leon Schreiber, SAMNET asked how many Israelis have applied for residency, work permits, or citizenship, and what checks are in place to ensure none have served in the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).

◼️ High gas utilisation will push electricity tariffs up: Experts warn that the high load factor for gas generation in the government’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2025 will increase electricity tariffs. This follows the recent cabinet approval of a long-term electricity generation plan, detailed by Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa at a media briefing. The full plan will be published in the Government Gazette on 24 October.

◼️ The Kruger National Park is here to stay: The EFF said that the name Kruger, from former president Paul Kruger, is named after a “vicious racist who sits as the pride of Afrikaner exceptionalism, invasion and land theft.” This has sparked fierce cultural and historical debate, with opponents warning that it would cost millions and hurt tourism in South Africa.
