Fri 26 September 2025:
Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Israel in Africa: For Israel, Africa provides contracts, votes and legitimacy. For African citizens, it too often means austerity, debt service and surveillance. The mask of aid conceals an extractive logic. Israel’s “return to Africa” looks less like partnership – and more like a system of control.

◼️ Operation Dudula vows to go after undocumented foreign nationals: Operation Dudula, which means “to force out” in isiZulu, was established in Soweto and has since become a political party. It campaigns on the platform that the presence of migrants contributes to crime, unemployment, and strained public services. Despite being widely described as xenophobic, the group denies these motives.https://independentpress.cc/operation-dudula-vows-to-go-after-undocumented-foreign-nationals/2025/09/25/

◼️ Mchunu’s move to scrap Political Killings Task Team was unlawful: Testifying at the commission on Thursday, Rooyen stated unequivocally that the Mchunu did not have the legal authority to make operational decisions such as dissolving a crime investigation unit.

◼️ Rooftop solar power outgunning Eskom: In August 2025, rooftop solar power capacity surpassed the combined output of all of Eskom’s utility-scale renewable power stations for the first time. According to the National Transmission Company of South Africa, the capacity of “behind-the-meter” rooftop solar power reached 7,345MW last month, compared with 2,885MW of utility-scale solar power.

◼️ Price pain coming for SA: Producer inflation in South Africa ticked higher than expected in August, with economists warning that more price pressure is coming in 2026 as higher electricity prices filter through. Consumers will suffer a double-blow from the hikes, having to take the direct hit from Eskom and municipalities hiking their prices, as well as through the higher prices of goods and services carried forward by producers and businesses.
