Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼
◼️SA rush for cheaper Botswana fuel expected: Transport companies await petrol and diesel price increases on 1 April, but Botswana’s price adjustments in the first week of April may offer temporary relief. South Africa will announce its fuel prices on 1 April, while the Botswana Energy Regulatory Agency (BERA) reviews prices based on global oil trends and the local currency. BERA’s Director, Batsumi Rankokwane, said a recommendation will be submitted to the Minister of Minerals and Energy for a decision.

◼️ Why SAPS can’t search every export container after the R4.3 billion drug case: This follows reports that narcotics worth R4.3 billion were allegedly shipped to India without detection. This comes after MK Party Member of Parliament (MP) Saira Abader asked Cachalia how such a large consignment could pass through port security, customs inspections, and border management controls undetected, which agencies were responsible for screening it, whether any officials had been disciplined, and what steps were being taken to prevent recurrence.

◼️ SA’s exclusion from G7 summit no surprise, says Ramaphosa: Reports on Thursday claimed the US had put huge pressure on France to rescind Ramaphosa’s invitation to the summit scheduled for June. They claimed US President Donald Trump had threatened to boycott the summit if the South African leader attended. “The invitation to the G7 does not mean that you’re being snubbed if you’re not invited or you’re being ignored,” said Ramaphosa. France has, however, denied yielding to any US pressure, saying it had decided to invite Kenya this time.

◼️ Truecaller changes on the cards for SA: Nevertheless, the Information Regulator is investigating Truecaller’s practices against the eight conditions set out in the country’s privacy laws. This includes informing people how their data will be used, ensuring the data is used securely, and not using more personal information than is necessary for the stated purpose. Truecaller said it has provided a comprehensive response to the investigation and has expressed willingness to meet the regulator halfway.
