Fri 31 October 2025:

Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ US caps refugees at 7,500, prioritizes white South Africans: The Trump administration has repeatedly claimed that the South African government is implementing anti-white policies through a new land expropriation law that allegedly targets Afrikaners’ land. The South African government has pushed back, calling the claims false as well as denying US accusations that Afrikaners are being subjected to racially motivated violence in rural areas.

◼️ ‘Sibiya is a criminal’: Tenderpreneur Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala told the police who arrested him for allegedly trying to murder his ex-girlfriend that he paid Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya millions of rands in cash after the deputy national commissioner asked him, “Can you take care of me, and I will take care of you?” Matlala is then asked by the police: “Take care of him in what way?”

◼️ New rooftop solar rules for SA: Under NERSA’s framework, all embedded generation systems under 100kVA—including residential solar installations—must be registered with Eskom or the relevant licensed electricity distributor, regardless of whether they export power to the grid. Only customers who are completely off-grid and can prove their systems operate independently of Eskom’s network are exempt from registration.

◼️ Albert Luthuli was beaten to death by apartheid police: “She further found that the cause of Luthuli’s death was a fractured skull and cerebral haemorrhage associated with assault,’ said Ramkisson-Kara. Hadebe found that his death was attributable to omissions as well as assault by members of the Security Branch acting in concert with employees of the South African Railways.

◼️ SA’s airlines facing disaster: These airports have been the most impacted by outdated procedures, with the local domestic aviation industry losing R30 million per month in additional fuel burn alone, as pilots have to fly to different airports to land in bad weather. The additional costs are passed onto passengers, raising ticket prices and creating reputational damage to South African airlines.
