Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ The way presidents in SA are elected is wrong says Mbeki: Former president Thabo Mbeki on Saturday called for a change in the way South Africa’s President is elected. At the launch of the National Dialogue for the Eastern Cape higher education sector at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha, Mbeki said, “The manner in which we elect the President is wrong. The question is never asked if a President is capable and a fit and proper person.

◼️ Dirco lashes out at AfriForum: “AfriForum’s logic: We support the rule of law only if the SA courts rule in our favour. If they don’t, we cry to foreign governments and undermine our country’s sovereignty,” Phiri said. AfriForum, however, defended its support of the US policy, claiming it reflected legitimate international concern for Afrikaners’ safety.

◼️ New rules coming for car licences in SA: The new system was supposed to launch on 1 November 2025 and would change how vehicle licences are are issued in the country, with a larger administrative burden for South African motorists. This was a requirement of the National Road Traffic Act. However, the City of Cape Town reached out to authorities to seek clarity on certain aspects.
