Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼
◼️ SA airport named the best in Africa: During the annual Skytrax World Airport Awards, the South African airport also received awards for the best staff among airports in Africa, as well as recognition as the cleanest airport on the continent. O.R. Tambo International Airport was named the second-best airport in Africa, while its hotel, the InterContinental O.R. Tambo Airport Hotel, received recognition as a top-five airport hotel in Africa.

◼️ Good news for prepaid electricity users with solar power: Once enabled, prepaid customers who register on Eskom’s small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) database will also be exempt from registration fees. “Customers may retain their existing setup or, where required, have a free smart meter installed, and still qualify for the cost waiver for systems of up to 50kW,” Eskom said. Many electricity users in South Africa prefer using prepaid, as it can make budgeting for electricity more predictable.

◼️SARS warning for wealthy taxpayers leaving SA: South Africans continue to make what can be described as a “silent exit” by relocating offshore and structuring income and assets abroad. However, they never formally renounce South African tax residency, which leaves them exposed to SARS taxing their worldwide income. This is the case irrespective of where the taxpayer lives, invests, or operates. “Physical absence alone does not sever tax residency,” Fraser and Cox warned.

◼️ Over 5 000 parolees reoffend: South Africa’s parole system is under renewed scrutiny after thousands of released offenders were found to have committed crimes – including serious violent offences – while out on parole. Across all provinces, the reported offences include stock theft, assault, rape, general theft, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

◼️ Archbishop Thabo Makgoba sounds the alarm on online gambling: “We heard of graduates who can’t find work borrowing money to gamble with in the hope of making a living, and of young people committing suicide in despair as a result of losing everything. “The crisis that harmful gambling represents for society must be addressed urgently across government and civil society. We need to treat gambling the way we dealt with smoking and alcohol, and consider banning – or at least imposing strict restrictions on – gambling advertising,” Makgoba said.
