◼️ US-blacklisted Russian cargo plane lands in South Africa, raising diplomatic tensions: A Russian cargo aircraft, which has been blacklisted by the US, and landed in Upington on Thursday was offloading transport general cargo, civilian helicopters, and acrobatic. aeroplanes, the Department of Transport confirmed on Sunday.

◼️ Eswatini to accept 11 more deportees from the US: The Eswatini government announced on Sunday that it would be receiving 11 foreign nationals deported from the US as President Donald Trump continues his crackdown on illegal immigrants. South Africa’s landlocked neighbour received five US deportees in August, but has stressed that they are not a danger to the general public.

◼️ Stay safe online: Film and Publications Board (FPB) Acting CEO Hulisani Ramugadi expressed concern about the rise in harmful online content, including image-based abuse, cyberbullying, hate speech, and malicious AI-generated material. He emphasised that sharing intimate images without consent was a crime and highlighted the FPB’s partnerships with social media platforms to issue takedown notices for harmful material.

◼️ Threat to new parental leave laws: Currently only biological mothers are entitled to four months of paid maternity leave. But on Friday the apex court confirmed a Johannesburg high court ruling of October 2023 which declared labour laws that entitle employed birth mothers to four months of maternity leave and fathers or partners to 10 days to take care of newborns invalid and inconsistent with the constitution.

◼️ 19,000 jobs lost per month: South Africa’s formal sector has shed 19,000 jobs a month over the last year, or 630 a day, according to the latest data from Statistics South Africa (StatsSA). The StatSA Quarterly Employment Survey revealed that 80,000 jobs were lost in the second quarter of 2025 alone.
