Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Sold for R14 million? The shocking claims behind SA’s Russia–Ukraine recruit scandal: “When they got to Russia, they found themselves being contracts written in Russian,” Mahlangu told the SABC. “They couldn’t understand what the contracts entailed until some South Africans, including Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla and others convinced them to sign.”

◼️ How the death of a key interest rate will rewrite 135 000 home loans: The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) noted that over 135,000 retail mortgage contracts will need renegotiation as the Johannesburg Interbank Average Rate (Jibar) is phased out by the end of 2026. Most of these mortgages, linked to Jibar, have been issued by SA Home Loans to its clients and those of Capitec, Discovery Bank, and Old Mutual.

◼️ Truecaller under investigation in SA: In June 2025, a group of companies and some individuals called on South Africa’s information Regulator to crack down on Truecaller. They claimed that the platform damages their reputations with spam labels and that it charges them a fee to be whitelisted. The Information Regulator subsequently said it was investigating the platform.

◼️ Zille confident DA will win in Joburg: Zille said: “I have been to Soweto numerous times during this campaign. I have had warm and friendly receptions wherever I have been. The conversations I have had shows me that people are clued-up on political developments. And they know that if they want things to change for the better, they have to vote for a new city government. “All the ingredients are in play for a DA win in Joburg.”

◼️ Collapse of the world’s biggest hospital built in SA: They reported severe staff shortages due to a moratorium on filling posts, extremely high nurse-to-patient ratios, and a lack of cleaners, which forces nurses to take on cleaning duties. Overcrowding is made worse by poor patient referral systems, leaving staff demoralised and stretched thin.
