Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Trump’s boycott triggers political storm in SA: DA spokesperson on international relations Ryan Smith said: “The ANC’s use of Dirco [department of international relations and cooperation] to entertain dalliances with Iran and other malign international actors is now affecting our standing with major countries and trading partners key to our economic prosperity.” ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula accused Trump of deliberately distorting South Africa’s democracy to stoke racial fear ahead of the US elections.

◼️ Post Office wants money from couriers: The South African Post Office wants the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) to fine couriers that deliver parcels weighing less than 1kg and ringfence the money for its use. This is because the Post Office claims they have contravened regulations that grant it exclusive rights to deliver parcels under 1kg in South Africa.

◼️ Bad news for South Africans living abroad: South African emigrants earning rent and dividends locally now need clearance from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) every time they transfer funds to foreign bank accounts. The new regulations have no annual limit, requiring clearance even for small amounts, and funds can be frozen for 21 days or longer if there are questions.

◼️ Big changes for school calendars: South Africa has historically adopted a staggered school calendar where inland schools started a week earlier than their coastal counterparts. This was done to accommodate people who were travelling from holidays, and to give schools and educators time to plan and prepare accordingly.

◼️ South Africans brace for budget that could change the cost of living: The markets will be watching Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana closely when he delivers the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement on November 12. Wednesday’s budget is likely to bring the cost of living into sharp focus, with economists saying he could well back a plan to lower the country’s inflation target range.
