However, a growing trend of TV licence payment avoidance in South Africa has put the broadcaster in a dire financial situation. TV licence fee avoidance rates have grown from 69% in 2019 to 85% in 2025, and even the broadcaster’s CEO and board chair have acknowledged that the scheme has failed.
