Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ SA notes Israel’s response filing to the ICJ: The State of Israel filed its response on Thursday, 12 March 2026. The Court had initially ordered Israel to respond by 28 July 2025 to South Africa’s Memorial – which was filed on 28 October 2024 – but on two occasions Israel requested for an extension to the time limits set by the Court, which the Court granted. South Africa will now consider Israel’s response and decide whether to request the Court’s permission to make further written submissions in reply, or to proceed directly to the oral phase of proceedings.

◼️ Ex-SAPS member arrested as alleged killer in Witness D case: The suspect is expected to appear before the Brakpan magistrate’s court on Monday. Police previously reported that they had found two cartridges at the crime scene where Marius van der Merwe, popular known as Witness D was shot dead in December. According to a source involved in the case, the suspect was linked through ballistic and car registration details.

◼️SA faces fuel rationing and long petrol queues: South Africa’s currently stable fuel supply is increasingly vulnerable due to escalating Middle East geopolitical tensions. James Lorimer, the DA spokesperson on Mineral and Petroleum Resources, acknowledged that while a possible shortage is a potential concern, it is not an immediate one. Lorimer stated that SA is “not too badly off” regarding crude oil, as only 18% comes from Saudi Arabia; most is sourced from West African nations like Nigeria, Angola, and Ghana.

◼️ Here is the expected petrol price for April: Motorists are in for a world of pain in April, with mid-month data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) pointing to steep price hikes for petrol and diesel on top of incoming tax increases. According to the CEF’s mid-March data, petrol and diesel prices are showing staggering under-recoveries, owing to the ongoing war in the Middle East.

◼️ E-toll pain is not over yet: Motorists with outstanding e-toll bills could still be held liable for their debts as the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) and the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) prepare for formal mediation. “Outa argues that Sanral effectively abandoned the cases after the entity’s board resolved in March 2019 to suspend the e-toll debt collection,” Outa said when it filed papers in the High Court in August 2025. “In the six years since then, Sanral has taken no further steps on these cases, and Outa is now seeking legal finality on the matters.”
