Mon 22 December 2025:
Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ No go for Eskom-Nersa R54bn secret settlement: The controversial R54 billion settlement reached in secret in July between Eskom and the energy regulator Nersa, which consumers would have had to pay through further electricity tariff increases, will not be made an order of the court. The court found that Nersa had never accurately determined the amount due to Eskom, following errors it made in the allowable revenue for its generation division. It was merely a compromise.

◼️ Salary hike for politicians: The trade union Cosatu has rejected a proposed 4.1% salary hike for government officials, including MPs, judges, and other politicians. The union stated that it would be unfair to grant politicians such a substantial salary increase while South Africans in general continue to experience poor service delivery, rising costs, and higher taxes. The hike would create another surge in South Africa’s already bloated government wage bill, while rewarding thousands of politicians who oversee municipalities that are collapsing due to poor governance.

◼️ Diesel ban still on the cards: The push for cleaner diesel is also driven by health and environmental concerns. Diesel engines emit higher levels of harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and fine particles, which worsen air quality and increase health risks. High sulphur levels also produce sulphur dioxide when burned, contributing to respiratory problems, acid rain, and engine corrosion. Reducing sulphur to 10ppm significantly lowers these risks.

◼️ 10 revelations from the Madlanga commission: Mogotsi, whom Mchunu has described as a “comrade”, made a few claims of his own. He claimed to have access to Saps classified information due to his position as an agent of Crime Intelligence. He said Mkhwanazi and King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini are CIA recruits.

◼️ Temu warning this festive season: Another frustrated user accused the company of giving fake delivery promises when it is unable to fulfil such promises. “Temu’s promises are pure fiction. Delivery in 6 days? Try 3 or 4 weeks with no clarity, no courier contact, and a useless tracking system,” they said. The online retail giant’s operations in South Africa are under scrutiny from the National Consumer Commission (NCC), which has launched formal investigations into Temu and Shein.
