Mon 23 February 2026:

Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ Mugabe’s son faces more charges as he pushes for bail: While a cartridge was found on the scene, police were not able to find the gun used in the crime. The house remained under lockdown since the incident, and searches for the firearm have so far drawn a blank. It is believed that Mugabe told police that the person shot was not a gardener but a security guard, and the man had shot himself.

◼️ Ramaphosa’s testimony for Ad Hoc Committee under question: While Ramaphosa is not a material witness or implicated, members still want him to respond to issues around the disbanding of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). Some members of the committee had called for Ramaphosa to appear in person, but the idea was not agreed to.

◼️ Navigating rising food prices: For the industry, FMD is as much about economics as it is about health, as it leads to immediate bans on international exports and strict internal movement controls. Meat inflation has hit double digits. As of early 2026, beef prices have surged by as much as 30% year-on-year. This is driven by high biosecurity costs for farmers and “panic buying” at the retail level.

◼️ Stricter gambling advertising controls: “These advertisements do not adequately communicate the dangers of gambling, and this has resulted in thousands of South Africans losing millions. This has exasperated the unsustainable growth of gambling in our country and must end now!” Gambling operators contend they are providing entertainment, yet recent studies show many gamblers are doing it out of desperation, even cutting back on groceries to place bets.

◼️ Traffic fine changes for South Africa: The RTIA, in charge of rolling out South Africa’s new AARTO system, says it will have to outsource the project to private companies because it lacks the funding needed to do it itself. The AARTO was supposed to start rolling out nationwide in December 2025, but this was delayed to July 2026. The system has faced immense pushback, but has been declared legal and constitutionally sound by the courts. Logistically, however, many municipalities in the country are ill-equipped to implement the new systems.
