HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SOUTH AFRICA TODAY | MONDAY – 23 MARCH 2026

Mon 23 March 2026:

Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ We will not be bullied: Public frustration with the United States’ involvement in South Africa’s internal affairs is mounting, as a large march in Johannesburg over the weekend showed. Protesters held placards declaring “We will not be bullied” and “In defence of our sovereignty and democratic gains”. Their message echoed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s warnings that America should not bully SA.

◼️ SARS clamps down on Trusts: The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is cracking down on trusts and their tax debt by fast-tracking civil judgments, giving trustees just days to act or risk having assets attached. This signals a sharp end to leniency and a push for strict compliance, with SARS already issuing notices to trusts with outstanding tax debt.

◼️ Too hot to handle: The SABC has canned its popular Face the Nation political talkshow — allegedly because ANC and government bigwigs don’t like the grilling they get from the show’s host, Clement Manyathela. Manyathela confirmed his prime-time show will not be renewed when its contract lapses at the end of the month — a move that raises questions about ANC and government influence on the public broadcaster, which is nominally independent of political interference.

◼️ Major blow to businesses employing more than 50 people: Under the laws, designated employers in South Africa—businesses employing over 50 people—are required to draw up plans to ensure their workforces reflect the country’s demographics at all levels. To this end, the government is now empowered to set numerical demographic targets for businesses across 18 sectors, pushing for black, Indian/Asian, coloured as well as female and disabled representation.

◼️ SA’s R1.5-trillion gambling habit… And the poor are paying: There, in bedrooms, taxis, hostels and factories, fortunes are chased and quietly lost. This is not simply entertainment. It is one of the largest ongoing transfers of wealth from low-income households to corporate balance sheets in modern South African history. The numbers are staggering. Legal gambling activity has exploded to levels once unimaginable.
