◼️ SA sees US trade negotiations continuing: South Africa’s efforts to secure a trade agreement with the U.S. have been complicated by issues including Trump’s unfounded accusations of persecution of South Africa’s white minority. Trump imposed a 30% tariff on imports from South Africa in August, which could cause tens of thousands of job losses at a time Africa’s biggest economy is barely growing.

◼️ Hawks probe allegations that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla allegedly sent 17 SA men to war: The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the Hawks are currently investigating a case opened against Duduzile Zuma Sambudla, following serious allegations related to the recruitment of 17 South African men who are purportedly trapped in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

◼️ Erdoğan backs SA on Palestine: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan affirmed his commitment to deepening economic trade and cooperation with South Africa on Sunday and said he backed its stance on the Palestinian cause. “Undoubtedly, the bilateral relations between the two countries are at a very good level right now,” Erdoğan told a media briefing in Johannesburg, where he attended this weekend’s G20 Leaders’ Summit.

◼️ New laws for South Africa: The new laws are centred around a national listing of plant varieties and maintaining quality standards for them. This also includes the registration of businesses relating to these varieties and the cultivation and sale of them. Notably, the laws enable a 2022 declaration wherein hemp varieties were included as protectable varieties, delivering a significant boost to the local production of low THC cannabis plants.
