Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ Madlanga commission resumes hearings: Mkhwanazi alleged that suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu and suspended deputy commissioner Shadrack Sibiya were working with criminal cartels. He said as a result, they might have influenced Mchunu to disband the political killings task team in December 2024 after the properties of alleged cartel members were raided earlier that month.

◼️ Hidden force trying to destroy the ANC: “That, comrades, resulted in the formation of an actual group, a formation with two strategic tasks: to defeat the ANC and to defeat the National Democratic Revolution.” Mbeki asserts that these “counter-revolutionaries” have been placed in strategic positions both in the party and throughout society. They are working to this day to bring the party down, Mbeki claims.

The group, which includes plaintiffs from Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa, alleges that Meta stores the substance of users’ communications and that workers can get access to them.

◼️ Eskom fines for unregistered solar power systems: “Eskom has the legal power to impose fines for illegal connections, but at this point in time, we are not deeming unregistered SSEGs as illegal,” Pillay said. “We are not intending to impose fines; all we are doing is encouraging customers to come forward [to register], and more so because they get a cost benefit from the concessionary campaign.”
