Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Phala phala report could do damage: The report on IPID’s investigation into Phala Phala could “seriously damage operational relations between institutions,” leading to its classification as “top secret” by the government, according to Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, adding that this is why it was “absolutely necessary’ to classify the report.

◼️ Investigation into electricity prices: This comes amid widespread dissatisfaction over high electricity costs, which has led to protest action in some areas. Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Energy and Electricity, has repeatedly also acknowledged that tariffs are unaffordable – not only for the poor, but even for middle-class and affluent consumers.

◼️ ANC scores 0%: The ANC and the government of national unity (GNU) have not implemented any of the demands from the United States to mend relations with South Africa. In June 2025, the United States made demands related to farm attacks, land expropriation, BEE, and “Kill the Boer” as preconditions to mend relations with South Africa. This information was shared by a South African delegation of Afrikaner leaders who met with senior White House officials.

◼️ Hijackers are targeting this car in SA: The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported 4,533 hijackings in the most recent three-month period, equating to roughly 50 vehicles per day. While this is a 15.1% decline from the same period in 2024, it’s still an alarming statistic that paints a picture of the risks involved with car ownership in South Africa.
