Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ White people hate BEE: Mantashe shared his views on black economic empowerment during a discussion on Newzroom Africa about the mining sector. He said that under the Apartheid government, black people were seen as instruments in mining rather than as employees. “We were not regarded as humans at the time. We were not regarded as employees. We were not regarded as people who could participate in the economy,” he said.

◼️ Inside the paedophile’s playbook: In South Africa, 33.9% of girls and 36.8% of boys have been sexually abused. Although not all abusers are paedophiles, research cited by the Karolinska Institute indicates that paedophiles who target girls have about 25 victims in their lifetime, while those who target boys can have more than 200. Many of these cases go unreported, though, especially when children have been groomed.

◼️ Homeowners in trouble: Residential mortgage defaults continue to rise strongly in South Africa despite significant reductions in interest rates and inflation over the past two years. This indicates that South African households are still under immense financial strain amid a stagnant economy and elevated unemployment. The pressure South Africans are under is also reflected by the unwillingness of banks to lend to homebuyers, with mortgage growth being among the slowest of all credit extension in the country.

◼️ The dangers women drivers face in the e-hailing industry: So, it is no surprise to find that very few women are visible in the delivery and e-hailing space, where they would find themselves in unknown places with people they don’t know. Simply put, in a country where women are so vulnerable, it makes sense that they would not want to knowingly put themselves in harm’s way.

◼️ Here is the school calendar for 2026: For private schools, the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa’s (ISASA) school calendar guidelines show that students will start term on the same day in 2026. However, private schools will also have slightly fewer school days than their public counterparts.
