Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ Witness D’s Madlanga testimony ‘angered certain elements of our society’: President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed shock and sadness over the murder of Madlanga Commission witness Marius van der Merwe, who was gunned down at his home in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, on Friday evening. Ramaphosa described the killing as an attack on justice and integrity. Van der Merwe, only known as “Witness D” at the Madlanga Commission, had testified about an alleged murder cover-up plot involving police and Ekurhuleni top cop Julius Mkhwanazi.

◼️ Zuma’s other daughter to be sworn in as MK party MP: In a leaked internal letter dated 2 December 2025 and seen by The Citizen, MK party secretary-general Bongani Mncwango wrote to the party’s chief whip, calling for the deployment of new MPs to fill vacancies in the National Assembly. Zuma-Sambudla stepped down from her position in Parliament last week following allegations that she was involved in recruiting young South African men who allegedly ended up in the Russian military campaign in Ukraine.

◼️ Whites are not doing badly in SA: As our graphs this week show, white people are doing very well in democratic South Africa. By nearly any measure of wealth and educational attainment, whites are doing better than any of the other apartheid-defined racial groups.

◼️ How WhatsApp group chats are turning SA teens into online bullies: Digital group chats, once harmless spaces for school chatter and memes, are increasingly becoming breeding grounds for coordinated online harassment among South African teens. Experts warn that WhatsApp-driven echo chambers, zero-rated data bundles and poorly moderated platforms are fuelling a new “pack mentality” that turns ordinary peer conflict into collective digital aggression.

◼️ End of an era for EskomSePush: EskomSePush (ESP) made key updates in 2025 to remain relevant in South Africa, as load-shedding has nearly become a thing of the past. With ESP Version 5, the app reorganised around actual suburbs instead of old load-shedding blocks. “Load-shedding still functions the same, but now your schedule, local chats, and outage reports are all based on the place you actually live and work,” Maritz said.
