Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ Multimillion-dollar crime wall causes uproar in SA: The lack of services in the settlement has again come under the spotlight after Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis announced controversial plans to build a wall to keep criminals at bay along the N2 highway, which abuts a series of townships, along with Cape Town International Airport. “I’m surprised they’ve got money for a wall but no money to buy land,” Jolingana said, referring to promises to relocate her community to an area where they would be provided with proper housing.

◼️ How Middle Eastern conflicts threaten SA’s economy: Roodt says that pressure will ripple far beyond the petrol pump. “For example, for agriculture, agricultural input like fertiliser prices are likely to go up, which will eventually be felt in an increase in food price inflation as well. So inflation likely to be the upper pressure inflation.” Rising inflation typically complicates policy decisions for the South African Reserve Bank, particularly when it comes to interest rate adjustments.

◼️ Motsepe denies ANC presidential ambitions: The ANC has been in the spotlight after intense lobbying by some in the party in favour of Motsepe running for the party Presidency at the 2027 elective conference. Recently, a “PM27” website was launched, urging South Africans to support the mining mogul and President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to replace President Cyril Ramaphosa as ANC leader.

◼️ Zille pledges 200 000 new jobs in Johannesburg: Zille unveiled five campaign pledges during the launch, with water supply and job creation forming the centrepiece of her platform. Her third pledge focuses on attracting at least 200 000 new jobs to the city. She said recent labour market trends show Johannesburg losing jobs while Cape Town has recorded employment gains. In the past three months, Johannesburg lost 49 000 jobs while the DA-run City of Cape Town gained 69 000 jobs.

◼️WhatsApp warning: The scammer referenced the correct account number and requested payment into an FNB account, which is concerning given that the customer’s outstanding amount exceeded R1 million. The customer suspected that something was awry and messaged the city to verify. He then made a payment to the city account. The customer then made a payment to the correct City account, not directly to the scammer’s bank account.
