Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ SA defends naval drills with Iran, Russia as ‘essential’: The drills, led by China, were more than a military exercise and a statement of intent among the BRICS group of emerging nations, Captain Nndwakhulu Thomas Thamaha, South Africa’s joint taskforce commander, told the opening Ceremony. South Africa drew criticism for hosting naval drills with Russia and China in 2023, coinciding with the first anniversary of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

◼️ Backlash over ‘lazy youth’ remarks: After facing backlash over comments suggesting that unemployed young people are lazy to apply for jobs, African National Congress (ANC) national chairperson Gwede Mantashe said he was misquoted.

◼️ When to expect 2026 university admission offers: Ordinarily, universities would have received the NSC results 72 hours (three days) before their public release. This timeframe enabled institutions to finalise admission decisions and issue acceptance letters on the same day learners received their results.

◼️ Explosive allegations about Uber vehicle safety in SA: The driver alleged that some vehicle inspectors are accepting bribes of R2,000 to produce false reports that cover up technical issues. “I have seen it happen right in front of me,” he said. “It is not happening at all the inspection branches, but many of them. More and more drivers are beginning to pay bribes for false reports.”

◼️ Should customers or banks carry the burden of cybercrime? “Many of these international frameworks provide substantial protection and compensation to consumers for losses incurred due to fraud, often through well-established mechanisms that shift or share liability in a more balanced manner.“Introducing similar protections in South Africa would likely face resistance from the banking sector, particularly around the potential financial and operational implications.
