Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️ Workers in SA could get paid for reporting their employer: Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has gazetted the Protected Disclosures Bill for public comment, which proposes rewarding whistleblowers. Kubayi said that there have been several instances where whistleblowers have suffered occupational detriment, including suspension and dismissal. “In some cases, dismissals are used to punish employees, payouts of benefits are delayed, and tragically, some whistleblowers have lost their lives,” the minister said.

◼️ New AI laws proposed for SA: The third pillar, safety and security, aims to protect South African citizens and infrastructure and will include installing robust controls to safeguard AI systems and information. The department added that South Africa must establish impeccable technical and legal remedies for deepfakes and defamatory AI. The final pillar is human-centred deployment, which focuses on implementing human control in the decision-making processes of AI systems, especially in generative AI.

◼️ High Court warning for estates and complexes collecting levies in SA: Levy collection practices that allow legal costs to spiral far beyond the underlying debt may not stand up in court, even where the arrears themselves are not disputed. In a judgment handed down on 10 March 2026, the High Court of South Africa refused to grant judgment against a homeowner living in a gated community. The case has highlighted and criticised how levy arrears are pursued in estates, gated communities, or sectional title schemes.

◼️ Waste of money: It has been revealed that R823 million has been set aside for the deployment of the military. However, many residents in Cape Town feel these are a waste of taxpayers’ money as there has been no change in the violence on the Cape Flats. This week, gunshots have been ringing in almost all areas across the Cape Flats.
