Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ What’s with all these Russian-made aircraft flying above Pretoria? With the sensational news of a mysterious Russian-owned Ilyushin Il-76 cargo aircraft landing at Upington last week, it’s understandable that South Africans have begun focusing their attention skyward or obsessively watching flight tracking apps.

◼️ Déjà vu? It’s barely enough to make a dent on South Africa’s official unemployment rate of 33.2%. In fact, he believes, the growth rate should be between 4% to 6% if the millions without jobs are to find work. Scepticism around the new economic plan is neither new nor unfounded, given the government’s poor track record beneath the fresh coat of 10-point-plan paint.

◼️ SANRAL faces R29 billion loss due to unpaid e-tolls: The Board had previously approved writing off R33.7 million of fruitless or irregular spending in 2023/24. In 2024/25, an additional R186 million of irregular expenditure was confirmed, with R1 billion still “under assessment” at the end of March.

◼️ Two deputy ministers’ offices rack up R14 million salary bill: Deputy Minister IK Morolong himself earns R2.2 million annually, which includes a R10 000 monthly allowance. His staff includes Moleme M, who earns R1.2 million plus an additional monthly allowance of R7 330. Lukas MJ, a seconded official, receives R1.1 million with the same additional monthly allowance. She explained that for international travel, the costs for official journeys abroad are covered by the relevant department. This includes expenses for the member’s spouse or an adult family member accompanying them in an official capacity.

◼️ Hidden pathways to British Citizenship: Before 1983, British nationality law was weighted heavily in favour of the paternal line. If your father was born in the UK, you stood a strong chance of qualifying for citizenship. But if your mother was the UK-born parent, the law didn’t treat you the same way.
