◼️ Examining poverty trends in South Africa: The report further highlights that progress in reducing poverty has been most pronounced among black African and Coloured populations, reflecting the positive impact of targeted social and economic interventions. However, the grassroots socialist movement of the poor, Abahlali base Mjondolo, said that the unemployment rate has increased drastically over the years, while there are more people, especially the youth, who still live in a state of hopelessness in the townships and in informal settlements.

◼️ SA formally asks fellow G20 members to object to its exclusion by the US: The note said that the US government had officially informed SA on 4 December that it was “not invited to participate in any G20 events during its presidency, including meetings of the sherpas, working groups, ministers as well as the 2026 Leaders’ Summit. “The United States of America further conveyed that it will forego the troika format during its G20 presidency.”

◼️ Rescue operation ongoing after Verulam temple collapse: The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when a four-storey structure under construction at the New Ahobilam Temple of Protection in Redcliff, north of Durban, collapsed during a concrete ready-mix pouring process. Meanwhile, the eThekwini Municipality revealed in a statement that preliminary findings indicate no approved building plans were in place for the collapsed structure, rendering it illegal.
